What's in a Week - Vol. 61
Important links to share and some updates.
As you have seen, Southern Appalachia and parts of Florida were hit hard by Hurricane Helene. This morning, Hurricane Milton has rapidly intensified and the Florida West Coast is on alert for the impending storm. In the West, we have extraordinary record heat and several wildfires. Disaster may seem like it's "over there," but no place is safe from it. I encourage all of you to research your local areas' disaster plans, and make your own plan to help you and your loved ones be empowered and as ready as possible.
On a personal note, my family in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina are okay. Many others are not. I heard from a friend for the first time today who almost drowned inside her home, and she says people are traumatized in the area. She had no running water, no power, no internet for 7 days, but she is safe now.
I can't even imagine. So I'm continually sharing ways to help.
Blue Ridge Public Radio has a great list of links to help Western North Carolina:

Western North Carolina Charity Auction and Anthology
To help my fellow Appalachians, one of the things I'm doing is offering up both signed books and donating a short story anthology to raise funds for folks in the area.
Here's info on the anthology:

Stars and Sabers Updates
Our debut anthology, Of Shadows, Stars and Sabers, is now with the final proofreader. We're very excited about this, as it gets the book close to being finished. Now that we know the final set of authors, our designers are finishing the back of the book cover and the spine, etc. layout for publication.
Be sure and keep up with our news:
On the Screen
This week's TV rotation included Slow Horses (in a brutal episode) and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The latter ended its second season with a powerful episode, in what was a riveting season overall. I hope we get season 3 renewal info soon.
On the Page
Right now, I'm not reading much, as I'm not in the mental space for it. But I did get the latest Helen of Wyndhorn comic, and it's great. Sometimes comics are the best things to read.
Writing Update
I am writing the science fiction and fantasy short story for the anthology donation above, and its first draft is due October 19. It's full of memories and love for the mountains, and some hope.
I'm told we'll get the Atacama cover reveal happens this month. We're almost there.
I will also have some future book news to share very soon.
The Week Ahead
I'm just sharing helpful links related to the devastation from Hurricane Helene. I'm sending every good wish to those out there suffering, no matter where you are. Coming together to help each other is the best thing we can do. And I'm hearing personal stories about friends and family doing this in Appalachia. They are guiding stars. Let's do the same.
Write on!
