What's in a Week - Vol. 62

This week is going to be full of cool news, but before that, let's catch up.

What's in a Week - Vol. 62

Western North Carolina Charity Auction and Anthology

To help my fellow Appalachians, one of the things I'm doing is offering up both signed books and donating a short story anthology to raise funds for folks in the area.

Here's info on the anthology:

I am donating a science fiction and fantasy short story full of Appalachian beauty, warmth, and charm.

Stars and Sabers Updates

Our debut anthology, Of Shadows, Stars and Sabers, is now proofread! Next up: formatting of the interior, and after that, completion of the full wraparound book cover (which cannot be formatted until we know the final page count of a formatted interior book).

We anticipate general preorders will begin sometime in November. The book publishes in February 2025. Crowdfunders, check your emails if you contributed via Ko-Fi or Indiegogo, as updates and a request were sent this weekend.

Be sure and keep up with our news:

On the Screen

This week, the season finale of Slow Horses rocked my world. What a superbly crafted and portrayed show! I'll be missing my favorite problematic spies, so I'll return to my spy movie watching soon.

This house was not, in fact, clean.

For now, though, I'm both revisiting classic horror movies and searching out new ones to enjoy. For the first time in probably 30 years, I rewatched Poltergeist. I have to say, it hits differently now that I'm a parent, versus seeing it when I was a little girl in the 80s (yes, I saw it too young, like all GenXers). I grew really emotional this time. And wow, this movie STILL holds up. Classic doesn't even begin to describe it. It's a masterpiece. And it's influenced so many things since (Stranger Things being probably the most obvious, but I suspect LOST also in some ways).

On the Page

Zatanna: Bring Down the House comics

I've got several books in my TBR, but between those, I'm very pleased by the latest DC Comics offering for one of my favorite characters, Zatanna. Zatanna: Bring Down the House, with words by Mariko Tamaki and art by Javier Rodriguez, is an extremely fun series. The art is sublime. And of course, we see messy and delightful John Constantine on one of the issues...good stuff.

Writing Update

I am writing the science fiction and fantasy short story for the anthology donation above, and its first draft is due October 19. I've sent in the description blurb for it, and I'm pleased with how it's coming along.

This coming week, several things will be announced. There is the Atacama cover reveal, possible book deal news, and another anthology I'm in gets its cover reveal as well. Doomflower cover art is also happening.

I'm also writing more on The Secret of the Sapphire Sentinel, which is approaching the 1/3 completion mark. After I submit my short story above, I'll pivot directly to this sequel, as well as something else contracted...

The Week Ahead

It's going to be a busy week of news and cover reveals, and I'm super excited! I have two blog posts drafted and ready to publish as soon as the news drops. So I'll be sending you more newsletters this week, just so you know.

Wishing you all a peaceful mid-October week.

Write on!
